Ski Gear Guide 2026

Everything you need to know about ski equipment — from choosing the right skis to layering your clothing. What to rent, what to buy, and how each piece affects your skiing.

Skis

Rent

Skis evolve every year. Renting lets you try different types (all-mountain, carving, freeride) without commitment. Only buy if you ski 20+ days/year.

Beginner

Short (chin height), soft flex, narrow waist. Easy to turn, forgiving at low speed.

Intermediate

Medium length (nose height), moderate flex, 80-90mm waist. Good on groomed runs with some off-piste capability.

Expert

Long (forehead+), stiff flex. Specialized: carving (narrow), all-mountain (88-100mm), freeride (100mm+), touring (lightweight).

Boots

Buy if 10+ days/year

Rental boots work for beginners and occasional skiers. But if you ski regularly, custom-fitted boots from a bootfitter are the single biggest upgrade you can make.

Beginner

Flex 60-80. Soft, easy to get in/out. Comfort over performance.

Intermediate

Flex 80-110. Moderate stiffness. Good balance of comfort and response.

Expert

Flex 110-130+. Stiff, precise. Requires strong technique to use effectively.

Helmet

Buy

Helmets are personal safety equipment. A properly fitted helmet that you know and trust is worth the €60-150 investment. Rental helmets may not fit as well.

All levels

Must sit level, cover temples and back of head. MIPS technology adds rotational impact protection. Should match your goggles with no "gaper gap".

Goggles

Buy

Like helmets, goggles are personal equipment. You need the right lens tint for conditions: orange/rose for flat light, dark for sunny days. Many goggles come with interchangeable lenses.

All levels

Anti-fog coating, UV 400 protection. OTG (over-the-glasses) models available for glasses wearers. Spend €50-150 for a quality pair.

The Three-Layer System

Ski clothing works in three layers: base layer (moisture wicking), mid-layer (insulation), and outer layer (waterproof + windproof). This system lets you add or remove layers based on temperature and activity level.

Base Layer

Merino wool or synthetic. Wicks sweat away from skin. NEVER cotton — it traps moisture and makes you cold.

Mid Layer

Fleece, softshell, or lightweight down. Traps warm air. Remove this layer on warm spring days.

Outer Layer

Waterproof ski jacket + pants. Look for 10,000mm+ waterproofing and taped seams. Vents help regulate temperature.
